Trauma doesn’t only come from the battlefield. A difficult childhood, a coercive or conflict-filled relationship, a toxic workplace, a natural disaster, an assault, a death, the loss of a friend or a support network…these things can shape our thinking, our behavior, and our well-being long after we’re supposed to be “over it.” If you’re not sure if you have experienced trauma, reach out and we can explore it together.
Religious community can be a nourishing spiritual space of communing with supportive others and connecting over a shared belief system. Unfortunately, it can also be a source of psychological abuse, shameful messages around personhood or emotions, and constant fear of punishment from a god figure. When these intense and emotional environments become coercive, overpowering, manipulating and rigid, they become abusive and traumatic. I provide a non-judgmental space where we can re-examine spirituality on your terms.
You are used to ignoring your body and powering through. Maybe you dull the discomfort with more work, or video games, or pot. But perhaps life is starting to feel like meaningless drudgery, and that voice keeps saying if you keep going just like this, something is going to give. I will help you start communicating with your body so you can take better care of it, and reconnect with well-being in all aspects of your life - not only your work, but also your health, your relationships, your emotions, and your play.
I identify as queer and I work to be an informed ally to all genders and sexual expressions: lesbian, gay, bisexual/pansexual, transgender, intersex, queer, questioning, and the asexuality spectrum. I also have personal experience with open relationships; it may be the focus of your therapy or simply a regular part of your life, but you can feel safe in this space knowing I will not judge you or question your relationship structure.
It’s tempting to believe that we can leave our past behind, isn’t it? But our childhoods dictate so much about our adulthoods - who we choose as partners, the jobs we take, the places we go, and where we feel safe. The body holds on to it all. Perhaps it was the way you were parented, or living through multiple moves or displacement, being bullied or isolated, caretaking for a parent or sibling as a child, significant loss, or living in poverty. Together, we can unearth what parts of you are still living in those realities, and you can start to become freer as your body starts updating its script.
I have worked in education and case management for many years and am passionate about assisting those in helping professions, such as social services providers, healthcare professionals, social workers, educators, and, YES, therapists! Helpers are particularly susceptible to “burnout,” the effect of witnessing the trauma their clients and students are going through, day in and day out, while having only a limited scope of influence to affect the situation. I would be honored to work with you to mitigate the effects of secondary trauma.
What a strange thing, the diagnosis of endo. Studies show it takes an average of 7 years to get a formal diagnosis, and in the meantime there is all the confusion, pain, and medical gaslighting. Maybe you are struggling with infertility, or chronic fatigue, or having to figure out what helps and what doesn’t help in a system that seems to not care. Stress, diet, work, play, and relationships all tie in to the management of endometriosis, whether or not you get surgery or are on medication. I will validate your experience and walk with you on this journey.
